What is a Piano Masterclass?

A Piano Masterclass is like a workshop usually conducted by professionals ranging from experienced instructors to lengendary performers.

Besides the usual lesson every week, it is a valuable experience for the student (and also for the observer) to be exposed to priceless learning opportunities from other masters.

Each demonstration is typically shorter than a normal class, focusing only on important aspects of each performance. It is a concentrated lesson over broader scope, giving participants a well rounded understanding of what goes into becoming a skillful pianist.

The student can also learn by observing how Mr Donald teaches the other participants.

What is the purpose of a Piano Masterclass?

Piano Masterclasses have been described as potentially life-changing events, offering the opportunity for participants ‘to touch a legend, to gain new insights. For music education, learning in a community setting is important, this offers the potential for pianists to learn within a growing community,  feel connected to others, and embrace new perspectives.

What is the difference between usual 1 to 1 piano lesson and a Piano Masterclass?

Masterclasses are no substitute for consistent and long term one-to-one work between student and teacher. It is a shorter session, highlighting new ideas and approaches to music-making. A fresh perspective from a professional musician offers a priceless commodity and an unforgettable experience for students. The performance setting in a Piano Masterclass also motivates participants and gives observers an opportunity to learn through watching how the teacher teaches.
